Labcode Designations for the 13th IHWG:

Labcodes serve several functions in the workshop.
1) Identifying your lab/tissue samples
2) Database utility
3) Authorization to shared resources
Follow the link to the right to enroll

Steps to Follow

1) Enroll in the workshop using the enrollment form.

2) Order your reagents. For high resolution HLA-A, B, C, DR, DQ, DP SSOP typing, workshop approved standardized reagents can be ordered from the SSOP provider. A complete listing of SSOP primers and probes can be found on the SSOP protocol pages. For high resolution HLA typing reagents using sequencing-based typing methods, standardized SBT primers can be ordered from the SBT Provider. For detection of HLA-A, B, C null alleles using the sequence-specific priming method, standardized SSP primers can be ordered from the SSP Provider.

If you will be using reverse line strip (RLS) typing (Anthropology only), RLS reagents can be ordered from Roche Molecular Systems. If you are interested in other typing methods (e.g., microsatellite testing, single nucleotide polymorphism typing), please contact the project leaders directly.

3) Order your reference panel. Reference panels of DNA for use as positive and negative primer and probe controls for SSOP typing (Panel 1) and SBT typing (Panel 2) will be available from the Cell and Gene Bank Reference/QC Order Form (PDF document for download). An announcement will be sent to all participants when these panels are available.

4) In order to participate in workshop studies, you will need to select specific workshop projects. Consult the Table of Technology for information about the typing methods and level of resolution used by each project. Please contact project leaders directly with specific questions about typing methods and protocols.

5) Establish a typing system in your laboratory and then validate the system with reference cells.

6) In order to submit data to the workshop you will need to pass a qualification test (more information here). Laboratories achieving greater than 92% accuracy for each locus typed will be approved for data entry. You can request a qualification test panel of 25 unknown cells using the same order form used for the Cell and Gene Bank Reference/QC Order Form (PDF format download). Please do not request these QC cells until you have established the typing system in your laboratory.

7) Type the qualification panel using the appropriate typing method and submit data to the Quality Control Laboratory using the data submission form (being revised and fine-tuned / available in the very near future). The data submission form is in Excel format; if you do not have this available on your computer, please contact gschoch@fhcrc.org (Gary Schoch) for an alternative method of data submission.

8) When your laboratory has successfully qualified for workshop studies, project leaders will contact you with specific instructions for participation in workshop projects that you have selected.
