13th IHWC
Organizational Meeting
Atlanta 1997
Atlanta, GA: A public planning meeting for the 13th IHWC was held on Tuesday, October 13 and 14, 1997 in Atlanta, GA, prior to the ASHI Annual Meeting. At this meeting component chairs presented the rationale and preliminary work scope for each of the proposed workshop components, with a general discussion following each presentation. This was the first opportunity chairs had to have interaction with the HLA community regarding workshop planning. After the component presentations, the floor was opened to proposals for additional workshop projects. There were several suggestions from the audience, and it was requested that written proposals for new components or projects be submitted to the Workshop Chairman for evaluation and acceptance as new components or inclusion within existing components. The afternoon session concluded with a general discussion period, during which it was evident that many laboratories using sequence specific primer (SSP) methodology were interested in participating in the workshop, leading to the suggestion that the Technology Development Component be broadened to include SSP.

Organizational Structure of the 13th IHWC

The scientific collaborations planned for the 13th IHWC will be organized into a series of working groups including core components. The core components provide shared resources needed to facilitate the objectives of the scientific components. The scientific components consist of eleven separate projects, each with its own planning committee.

Core Components:
Development and Standardization of Methods
for Scientific Projects
The SSOP and SBT Typing Components have been busy developing protocols and defining reagents and will be ready to begin preliminary laboratory trials in early 1999. The SSP and SNP Typing Components are also being organized, and are undertaking surveys of interested laboratories. A central workshop repository for B-lymphoblastoid cell lines, DNA and cloned HLA genes is being established to provide a library of reference material for individual workshop projects. The 12th IHWC database and software are currently being analyzed and will be incorporated into the 13th IHWC database. Erik Rozemuller (Utrecht) is the Chair of the Informatics Component. The Core Components will thus provide centralized support for the scientific projects of the workshop that are set to begin in 1999.
